Proctor Students Compete in Oneida County Environthon

In April three teams from Proctor High School’s Environmental Science Club competed against 28 teams from other schools in the Oneida County Envirothon. Organized by the Oneida

County Soil and Water Conservation District and held at the Utica Zoo and New York Energy Zone, students had to answer questions about wildlife biology, aquatics, forestry, soils and current events.

Proctor Team number two tied for first place in the current events category and lost a tough tiebreaker. Proctor Team one did very well in the aquatics category. Additionally, students had to prepare, record and present an oral presentation on non-point source pollution. Proctor Team three was chosen as a top three finalist for their oral presentation, which was lauded for its unique idea of using coffee grounds as an environmentally friendly substitute for road salt. Many thanks to Mr. Shortell and Proctor’s Media Club for their expertise in recording the oral presentations in Proctor’s very own studio and to Environmental Science Club advisors Mr. Aurigema and Mr.Boyd for working to prepare students for this exciting event.

Congratulations to all who participated! All three teams were excellent ambassadors for Proctor High School. Go Raiders! #UticaUnited
